Mycenae is an archaeological site in Greece, located about 90 km southwest of Athens, and is one of the foundational sites of European civilization. It is believed that Mycenae was settled by Indo-Europeans who practiced farming and herding, close to 2000 BC. The site has been well-preserved; the massive ruins of the cyclopean walls and the palaces on the acropolis were built a thousand years before the monuments of Classical Greece.
